The crisis started in early 2020 and is unfortunately still spreading across the globe. It is tragic from a human, social and economic perspective. In this last regard, all industries have been affected and, in many cases, entire industrial sectors have been severely impacted by the emergency. Nonetheless this crisis represents an opportunity for change, from both an economic point of view and a technological development. In this respect, the energy sector can become a catalyst for resuming economic growth, as long as a series of urgent measures are enacted to make the system more flexible after the slump in the demand for electricity.

Therefore, our latest issue of Energy Journal (The Pandemic Crisis: Energetic Recovery) focuses on how COVID-19 has represented a stress test for the energy system and on what this means for our energy future, as discussed in the Scenario section. Through our analysis, presented in Top Story, we compare the effect of the pandemic on energy systems to a “sneak peek” into the future, a preview of what (prior to COVID-19) had been forecasted for 2026.

In fact, as you can read in Future & Technology, the energy transition has been affected by the current crisis, but it has also been able to figure out tools and innovations to overcome it.  In this context, we also conducted interviews with Francesco Starace (CEO and General Manager, Enel), Jean-Marie Dauger (President, World Energy Council) and Mark Jacobson (Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University), which are presented in Opinions.

Furthermore, Industries & Countries highlights the different reactions to the emergency across five continents, underlying various possible solutions that could be implemented on a global scale in the near future. Speaking of future, One on One focuses on alternative formulas for the economic recovery, a crucial point of discussion in the current time frame.
