CESI plays an essential role in the development of the second HVAC electrical interconnection system (IC2) between Sicily and the island of Malta, a project designed to strengthen energy exchange between the two regions. With a power capacity of 225 MW, the IC2 infrastructure includes a 220-kV submarine power link extending 100 km, onshore connections measuring 21 km in Sicily and 2 km in Malta, and upgrades to the terminal stations in Ragusa and Maghtab. Preparatory works for this initiative has been carried out in the previous months by a consortium led by CESI.
As part of the CESI-Techfem Joint Venture, CESI provided critical support to the client, Interconnect Malta Ltd (ICM), during the preparatory phases of the project. This included the FEED design, the preparation of technical documents for tendering purposes, the development of materials for project authorization processes in both Italy and Malta, and assistance to ICM in discussions with Italian authorities to secure the Autorizzazione Unica.
The year 2024 marked significant milestones for the IC2 project. ICM successfully obtained the necessary authorization for the Maltese portion of the project, launched all tenders associated with the initiative and awarded some of the contracts. In December 2024, the Autorizzazione Unica for the Italian portion of the project was issued by MASE, the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security. These achievements reflect CESI’s expertise and dedication to advancing sustainable energy infrastructure while fostering regional cooperation and energy security
