CESI: Advancing Energy Access and Sustainability Across Regions
15 . Jan . 2025

CESI is leading transformative initiatives in the energy sector, advancing sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since spring 2023, CESI has been the lead partner in a project to develop a 400 kV interconnection between Uganda (Olwiyo) and South Sudan (Juba). This first-ever transmission infrastructure in South Sudan aims to improve electricity access and foster the regional electricity market. The project includes feasibility studies, preliminary designs, and an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), addressing the urgent need for energy access in sub-Saharan Africa, where 600 million people still lack electricity.

Concurrently, CESI is engaged in the Black Sea Submarine Cable (BSCC) project, a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system linking Georgia and Romania via 1,100 kilometers of 525 kV submarine cables. This initiative enhances energy reliability and regional connectivity, while a parallel fiber optic cable improves broadband access in the southern Caucasus. CESI’s tasks include interconnection capacity assessment, technical specifications, cost analysis, and implementation supervision.

Additionally, CESI is contributing to a green energy corridor connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary. Commissioned in 2024, this project optimizes renewable energy and green hydrogen exports to Europe. At COP29, CESI’s CEO Nicola Melchiotti joined energy ministers to discuss progress and infrastructure needs for this initiative, which aims to create a unified strategy for 2030–2040. These efforts underscore CESI’s role in advancing energy access, sustainability, and global connectivity.
