CESI’s Role in EU Renewable Energy Integration

CESI’s Role in EU Renewable Energy Integration
30 . Dec . 2024

The European Union aims to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the electricity sector from 55% to approximately 70% by 2030. However, achieving this ambitious goal will require more than leveraging local resources. According to CESI, decarbonizing Europe’s electricity sector calls for integrating renewable resources from neighboring regions into the EU grid.

This vision necessitates the development of extensive interconnection projects that demand significant investments, technological advancements, and innovative business models to ensure a successful and sustainable transition. CESI is actively partnering with private and institutional project promoters to conduct comprehensive feasibility studies. These studies address key areas such as the identification of technological solutions, environmental impact assessments, economic indicators, and regulatory compliance with EU directives. Furthermore, CESI’s analysis includes the design of potential business models and funding strategies to support project realization.

Several interconnection projects are already under evaluation, with some advancing to critical stages. A number are part of the ENTSO-E Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) or have applied for integration into national transmission networks. Key regions of focus include the greater Mediterranean area, encompassing countries in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia with significant solar energy potential, and the trans-Caucasus region, where Azerbaijan plays a important role thanks to its untapped wind resources in the Caspian Sea.

CESI’s dedication to enabling these cross-border renewable energy projects highlights its commitment to helping the EU achieve its decarbonization targets while fostering regional collaboration and sustainable development.
