CESI Supports Tanzania’s Energy Connectivity Project

CESI Supports Tanzania’s Energy Connectivity Project
10 . Feb . 2025

Since February 2024, CESI, as the lead partner in a joint venture, has been engaged in an ambitious project aimed at enhancing energy connectivity between mainland Tanzania and the islands of Unguja and Pemba (Zanzibar) and Mafia (in the District of Pwani). The initiative focuses on developing new submarine connections and terrestrial transmission lines to meet the region’s growing electricity demands while supporting clean energy goals. The project involves a technical-economic feasibility study to assess the viability of the transmission lines and infrastructure, along with an environmental and social impact assessment to ensure sustainability.

Additionally, it includes a framework plan for potential resettlements, the project concept, and detailed tender documents for both submarine and terrestrial sections. A critical aspect of the study is evaluating the proposed solutions in an environmentally and economically sustainable manner, ensuring alignment with Tanzania’s clean energy objectives. The development plan will address key factors such as regional energy cooperation, transitioning from coal generation, electricity system costs, the role of hydropower, and support for renewable energy integration.

Through a high-level cost-benefit analysis, the study aims to help policymakers identify optimal locations for new renewable energy plants, minimizing social costs and maximizing energy efficiency. This strategic initiative highlights CESI’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and connected energy future for Tanzania and its islands.
