KEMA Labs Innovates EV Safety Testing
18 . Nov . 2024

KEMA Labs, the Testing, Inspection, and certification business unit of the CESI Group, is setting new standards in e-mobility safety. In an Electrive interview, Stefan Schwanck, Head of Low Voltage Labs at KEMA Labs Berlin, unveiled their cutting-edge test bench for Pyroswitch DC components, essential for electric vehicle (EV) safety.

Pyroswitches act as rapid battery disconnects in milliseconds during crashes, protecting passengers. To meet rigorous safety demands, KEMA Labs designed a system capable of handling up to 1,500 volts and 35kA short-circuit current with under 10 μH inductance. The test bench, compliant with UNECE R100 standards, includes a climatic chamber and a 2F capacitor bank, enabling precise, real-world evaluations.

Schwanck highlighted his team’s expertise in overcoming complex challenges to deliver solutions not just for EVs, but also for sectors like aerospace.
