The KEMA High-Voltage Laboratory is a well-known independent laboratory for testing and certification of medium and high voltage components used in the electrical infrastructure. Our customers are manufacturers and utilities world-wide, in particular Europe, Asia, America and the Middle East.

The KEMA High-Voltage Laboratory issues Type Test Certificates, Test Reports and Inspection Reports for tests on cables, cable accessories, insulators, power transformers, instrument transformers, GIS, switchgear, panels and other components. We have multiple flexible test bays available and can work for several clients in parallel.

Team and location

Execution of tasks as Technician in the HVL or at the test location of the customer, in the field of high voltage power equipment. The tasks are usually performed in the direct presence of the customer.

Place in organisation

Responsible to the Head of Section HVL Technicians and during the execution of tests to the responsible test engineer.

You work from the Arnhem office but will have responsibilities that include occasional travel within Europe.

Job description

As a Technician, you are responsible for the preparation, construction, and monitoring of measurement setups for high voltage tests in the laboratory or in the field. Under the supervision of a test engineer you will perform several electrical tests. Next to executing tests you will actively be involved in the maintenance of measuring equipment and measurement setups.

  • Operational:
    • Preparation and construction of planned test and measuring equipment under the guidance of the test engineer
    • Preparing tests objects if necessary
    • Arranging or making tools if necessary
    • Checking installations for proper operation and safety
  • Execution:
    • Executing tests under the guidance of the test engineer
    • Safety in accordance with Safety Procedure High Voltage
    • Operating installations and equipment
    • Proper use of measurement results
    • Applying instructions and regulations
    • Assisting customers, if present.
  • Completion:
    • Dismantling setup after tests, delivering cleared test field, tidying up used measuring tools.
    • Transporting test objects in consultation with the test engineer.

You have a degree Intermediate Vocational Education preferably in electrical engineering. Experience in a similar job is preferable. Our international customers are very often present during the execution of the test. Therefore, knowledge of Dutch and English is required. Knowledge of German is an advantage. As a test engineer for Energy Meter you carry out different tests like metrological accuracy, software and reliability reviews, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tests and climatic and mechanical tests. You will be responsible to further develop our existing and upcoming services in the area of Power Cybernetics as well as for creating new or related services for KEMA Labs to position the company for further growth within the power system industry.

In particular you will be working on the development of sophisticated closed-loop testing and validation methods of power equipment (such as Photovoltaic-inverters, plug-in electrical vehicles, heat pumps, etc.), including its hardware testing, simulation and software model validation, in a professional laboratory environment.

    • Manage Customer expectations before, during and after the test program evolution. Act as the single point of contact with the Customer representatives during the conduct of the test program at the KEMA Labs – Chalfont facility.
    • Identify and prepare circuits and procedural sequences including measuring equipment and systems to meet test requirements using industry standards and/or Customer’s test plans.
    • Assure all requirements of the KEMA Labs – Chalfont HSE and Quality Management programs are strictly adhered to during the test program.
  • Develop test programs and assure all necessary requirements and conditions stipulated in the approved Quote are incorporated in the test program.
  • Monitor test program preparation and execution to ensure safety of the personnel and equipment utilized in conducting each test evolution. Provide technical direction to Test Operations personnel as necessary.
  • Analyze the test results, prepare a comprehensive written Test Report and/or review the test results with the Customer. Assure accuracy of the Test Report and compliance with all applicable industry standards and Customer requirements as described in the Quote, and Test Plans.
  • Assure that all written Test Reports strictly adhere to all requirements of the KEMA Labs – Chalfont Quality Management programs.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of applicable ANSI, IEEE, IEC, UL, and other standards for electrical/mechanical equipment.
  • As necessary, review Customer Quotes for technical requirements, facility adequacy, Test Operations skills requirements and provide information to the Sales Engineer for incorporation in the Quote. Contact the Customer as required, clarifying, or resolving discrepancies, open issues, questions, etc. Assure requirements are incorporated in the final Quote and advise the Head of HPL regarding readiness for approval of the Quote.
  • Perform the duties of Operators and Technicians as operating conditions warrant.

Under the direction of Test Engineer or Test Operator:

    • Identify and safely set up the test fixtures, appurtenances, auxiliary equipment, etc. which will be required for assigned tests based on expected current and voltage levels, Customer requirements and Test Cell and facility status
    • Conduct troubleshooting and correction of any facility or equipment malfunctions, failures, sub optimal performance, etc. to safely and effectively complete the test evolution
    • Correctly provide auxiliary power to the Customers’ equipment based on the test plans
    • Assist the Test Engineer in preparing for the test including review of drawings, Test Plans, and test sequence
    • Provide ongoing feedback to the Senior Test Engineer and Test Engineer during the execution of the test
    • At the conclusion of the test sequence, safely remove all test fixtures, appurtenances, auxiliary equipment, etc. and restore the test cell and facility to pre-test status.
    • Take corrective actions as necessary based on the results of the above
    • Interface and communicate with Customers during the conduct of customer testing activities
  • Perform minor maintenance and housekeeping activities as required
  • Assist the Logistics Technician as required in material handling activities
  • Safely and effectively operate cranes, hoists, man lifts, forklifts, and other motorized equipment
