On March 2018 CESI organized and hosted an event with ITCOLD – the Italian Committee on Large Dams, focused on penstocks. During the workshop, a specific ITCOLD’s Group discussed the main characteristics of penstocks, analyzing their control methodologies, the most common problems associated to their functioning and the most effective evaluation criteria. These topics will be the start point of additional future studies.
The work group with CESI’s experts presented its study with particular attention to monitoring methods, from visual controls and inspections types to other kinds of surveys.
Several other experts – from dealers to control bodies, consultancy and research societies – gave their contribution to the issue. The Group was created to address different topics, such as the analysis of geological context, various safety aspects, and any problem which may occur when dealing with remediation at a national and international level.
Since its foundation, ITCOLD promotes and facilitates the study of all the issues linked to dams, from their realization to their commissioning.
