Advanced testing solutions for pyrofuses and contactors to ensure safety and reliability in next-generation electric vehicles.

As electric mobility continues to evolve, the demand for safe, high-performance protection components has never been greater. Among these, pyrofuses (also known as pyro-switches or pyrotechnic fuses) play a critical role in DC applications. Designed to provide rapid circuit disconnection during overcurrent events, pyrofuses are essential for ensuring the safety of electric vehicles by preventing electrical fires or component damage. Their ability to interrupt high currents in milliseconds makes them a key component in modern EV battery packs and power distribution units.

KEMA Labs Berlin has become an international competence center for the testing of pyrofuses and contactors, providing advanced infrastructure tailored to the unique demands of DC circuit protection.

To support the growing need for reliable testing, KEMA Labs developed a laboratory with the following capabilities:

  • Making and breaking capacity evaluation
  • DC short-time withstand current testing
  • Small time constant and/or low inductance circuit simulation

Testing Lab performance:

  • 14 control cabinets equipped with bidirectional DC power supply
  • Voltage range from 48VDC up to 1500VDC
  • Current up to 35kA
  • Capacitor banks with energy storage up to 2F
  • Test circuit inductance from >6.3μH to <20μH
  • Explosion-proof climatic chamber supporting extreme temperatures (approx. -40°F to 302°F / -40°C to +150°C)
  • Thanks to these state-of-the-art capabilities, KEMA Labs is uniquely positioned to validate the performance and safety of pyrofuses and other critical components for the future of DC mobility.
