The European Union has updated the Measuring Instruments Directive — MID — bringing EV charging systems, DC metering and digital measurement solutions into a clearer regulatory framework.
The revision is particularly relevant for manufacturers, operators and technology providers working in electric mobility and smart energy systems. With its testing and certification expertise, KEMA Labs supports companies in understanding the new requirements and preparing their products for the European market.
Directive (EU) 2026/706 updates the existing MID 2014/32/EU to reflect the evolution of charging infrastructure, smart metering and digital billing. Under the revised framework, EV charging systems — including AC and DC applications — are brought within EU-level metrology requirements. DC electricity metering is explicitly addressed, while digital and remote display solutions are recognised as part of modern measuring systems.
The new rules strengthen the role of measured energy as the legal basis for billing in EV charging. They also support greater transparency for users and a more harmonised market for companies operating across Europe.
The directive entered into force on 9 April 2026. Member States must transpose it into national law by 10 April 2028, while the new requirements will apply from 10 October 2028. Transitional provisions apply to certain equipment, including EV charging systems placed on the market under national rules before 10 April 2030.
KEMA Labs can support manufacturers and operators through EV charging system testing, electricity meter conformity assessment — including DC metering — EMC and smart metering testing, and technical support for MID compliance and market readiness.
The updated MID framework marks an important step towards a more transparent, digital and scalable EV charging ecosystem. For companies active in electric mobility and smart grids, now is the time to assess product portfolios, certification strategies and compliance plans.
