CESI at RES4Africa Roundtable
06 . May . 2026

CESI took part in the roundtable “Lessons Learned for the Establishment of a Competitive Electricity Market in South Africa”, organised by RES4Africa Foundation on 13 April 2026 in Rome, on the occasion of the institutional visit of representatives from the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) and the Department of Electricity and Energy (DEE).

The event brought together Italian and international stakeholders to share experiences and best practices supporting South Africa’s transition towards the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM), expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2026. The discussion focused on key aspects of a liberalised electricity market, including system operation, market design, infrastructure planning and flexibility solutions.

CESI was represented by Simone Pasquini, Area Manager – Africa, who participated as a speaker, contributing CESI’s perspective and international experience on renewable energy integration and grid planning in competitive electricity markets. His contribution highlighted the importance of a solid technical framework and long‑term planning to ensure system reliability while enabling the large‑scale integration of renewable sources.

The roundtable offered a valuable opportunity for dialogue with South African institutions, reinforcing cooperation and knowledge exchange in support of a secure, efficient and sustainable energy transition.
