EnerNex at IEEE PES Atlanta Technical Talk
18 . Jun . 2025

EnerNex, part of the CESI Group, participated in the IEEE Power & Energy Society’s Atlanta Chapter Technical Talk on June 11. Represented by Dr. David A. Bishop, the company contributed to the presentation titled “Innovation for the Future: Enhancing System Protection with IEC‑61850,” which showcased real-world applications of the IEC‑61850 protocol.

During the event, Dr. Bishop and other experts discussed a compelling case study involving a utility with five distribution lines on shared poles. They demonstrated how transitioning from hard-wired I/O to IEC‑61850 GOOSE messaging enabled advanced cross‑interlock schemes and staggered reclosing logic—without the need for additional cabling. This approach not only reduced costs and installation time but also improved reliability by allowing relays to exchange fault current data in real time.

The session also included a lab demonstration in Burns & McDonnell’s Atlanta facility, highlighting how programmable logic via IEC‑61850 can modernize existing substations efficiently.
