CESI Consulting’s Environment team has developed a new and effective method to remediate soil and groundwater polluted by heavy hydrocarbons and fuel oils — substances often originated by previous industrial activity. The solution combines biodegradable compounds with a natural process that uses bacteria naturally present in the soil to break down the contaminants.
At its laboratories in Piacenza, CESI Consulting tested various approaches, both in small-scale lab settings and in a specialized bioreactor designed to simulate real-life conditions. The team analyzed chemical and physical properties of the polluted soil using advanced techniques — such as gas chromatography speciation, to identify the different substances and viscosity testing. These analyses helped define the most effective mix of compounds and the ideal treatment timing for maximum results.
Following successful lab and field tests, CESI’s environmental experts designed several large-scale soil cleanup projects — including some of the most important enhanced bioremediation currently underway in Italy.
Today, CESI Consulting continues to develop and test environmental solutions, helping clients make informed decisions with reliable data and sustainable results. The goal? Protect natural resources while ensuring every step is both effective and environmentally responsible.
