CESI’s Role in Oman’s Renewable Energy Transition and SF6-Free Solutions

CESI’s Role in Oman’s Renewable Energy Transition and SF6-Free Solutions
06 . Nov . 2024

CESI plays a key role in advancing renewable energy integration in Oman, a country crucial for energy security in the Gulf region. Through the development of standards for solar photovoltaic (PV) plants, CESI ensures that these renewable sources connect seamlessly to the national grid without compromising network reliability, particularly as Oman’s electricity demand has surged by 140% over the past decade. While Oman boasts some of the highest solar density levels globally, it still heavily relies on fossil fuel-powered plants. The country is now moving towards diversifying its energy mix, with significant investments in solar and wind power being driven by private sector initiatives.

CESI’s work also includes updating the 2040 masterplan for the Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC), aimed at ensuring the long-term economic and sustainable development of the transmission system. This plan supports the integration of renewable energy sources, aligning with the objectives of the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP). Furthermore, CESI’s approach supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on clean energy production (SDG 7 and 13), reliable energy access (SDG 10), and the development of non-conventional transmission technologies to reduce environmental impact (SDG 9).

In addition to fostering renewables, CESI is addressing critical challenges associated with the use of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), a potent greenhouse gas widely used for its excellent insulating properties in high-voltage equipment. Though SF6 does not harm the ozone layer or cause direct air pollution, its high global warming potential makes proper monitoring essential. To mitigate these risks, CESI’s KEMA Labs are at the forefront of testing and promoting SF6-free technologies, ensuring safe handling and disposal of decomposition byproducts and supporting industry efforts to develop alternatives.

CESI’s initiatives in Oman and its environmental leadership through KEMA Labs highlight the company’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions and cutting-edge research, setting a benchmark for energy innovation in the region and globally.
