Today at CESI, a significant event titled “Solar Cells: Energy for Space” took place with notable guests including Teodoro Valente, President of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Italian astronaut Roberto Vittori, and Massimo Comparini, CEO of Thales Alenia Space Italy.
During the event, CESI highlighted its pivotal role in strategic agreements with ASI, signed in July, which aim to boost the production capacity of solar cells for space applications.
As reported by La Repubblica, La Stampa, and Inside Over, CESI’s initiatives have positioned it at the forefront of the space economy, with more than 100 satellites currently in orbit equipped with its cells. “Space technologies will increasingly support terrestrial applications, thereby improving life on our planet. This requires deep expertise for their development in the coming years. CESI is ready for this challenge,” stated Domenico Villani, CEO of CESI Group.
The success of ambitious projects depends on innovative technologies that adapt to the dynamic needs of space exploration. ASI President Teodoro Valente highlighted Italian excellence in space technology. CESI’s investments in low-cost triple-junction solar cells and thin-film triple-junction solar cells cater to the growing demand in the space market. These cells are thinner (i.e., lighter), more flexible, more efficient, and more cost-effective—parameters that are important for any application, but are critical in aerospace, where “an additional 1% in efficiency can be the difference between undertaking a mission or not,” said Massimo Comparini, CEO of Thales Alenia Space Italy.
Finally, Roberto Vittori emphasized the potential for innovation if Italian enterprises can find a balance between start-ups and traditional industries, similar to the approach in the United States.
CESI’s steadfast dedication to innovation and research continues to strengthen its position as a leader in the space sector, driving advancements in space innovation, solar energy, and the space economy.
