Revision of operational studies and electricity trade opportunities for GCC Interconnected grid

Revision of the GCC Interconnection Authority scope of operational studies for the GCC interconnected grid and electricity trade opportunities among GCCIA Countries

The Gulf Co-operation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) has built a 400kV super grid that connects the electrical power networks of the Arabian Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) enabling electrical energy exchange and emergency support among these countries.

CESI was asked to perform operational studies aimed at supplying recommendations for the secure operation of this combined system in normal and emergency conditions, considering two different time scenarios.

The project was organized into three main tasks. CESI consultancy services included:

Task 1:

  • Review of operational standards, including recommendations for the future integration of renewable energy and nuclear resources
  • Methodology for operational studies
  • Power System Simulator for Engineering (PSS®E) power system model set-up related to the whole combined system

Task 2:

  • Transfer-stability limits between member states
  • Short circuit currents
  • Oscillation analysis (small signal stability analysis)

Task 3:

  • Dynamic security assessment
  • Review of defence plans
