The KEMA Powertest high voltage laboratory in Chalfont, PA recently received a significant upgrade.

The series resonant test set, used to produce extremely high voltages at power frequency (60-Hz), was replaced with a newer, more capable system that can supply up to 600,000 Volts at currents up to 4 Amps. High voltage testing performed at the KEMA Powertest high voltage laboratory helps manufacturers and users of power system equipment ensure that their products are robust and reliable.

The new test set more than doubles the capacity of the one it replaces. It also adds important new features such as automatic voltage control and automatic tuning control. When coupled with additional investments being made in partial discharge measurement, the KEMA Powertest high voltage laboratory will be much better positioned to serve a growing markets for the high voltage equipment needed to modernize and decarbonize the US electric grid.

Installing this marvel of technology was a complex task that required the support of electricians, carpenters, riggers, engineers, and technicians. With individual components weighing as much as 15,000 kg, this was a heavy lift indeed. Thanks to the diligence and professionalism of everyone involved, the task was completed safely. The completed system including regulator, exciter, reactors, and voltage divider.

The investments being made in the KEMA Powertest high voltage laboratory demonstrate our commitment to bringing world class service to our clients.
