As sustainable energy becomes more widespread, energy storage solutions are becoming essential to balance electricity supply and demand. Whether you are seeking to bring new products to market or consolidating a developed technology, the right partner is  crucial  .

Our energy storage experts offer non-destructive (pre-)  testing of batteries  in dedicated facilities, as well as:

  • Functional, climatic and  electromagnetic compatibility  testing
  • Identifying how energy storage devices could help you or your company
  • Verifying the performance measurements and modelling of new applications, including systems adjacent to your energy storage system
  • Validating and expert witnessing (on-site) services
  • Insight into regulatory issues
  • Life cycle tests in conditioned environments
  • Failure investigation of energy storage systems
  • Safety tests such as  drop  tests, fire tests and crush tests
  • Grid  tests and modelling of grid-connected storage applications

BESS Commissioning & Performance Testing

We support the  initial commissioning and system integration  of BESS in a controlled laboratory environment. Our services help validate the performance and safety of your systems before field deployment.

Key Services:

  • System integration and commissioning support
  • Charge/discharge behavior and electrical efficiency analysis (AC↔DC)
  • Thermal resistance testing under various scenarios

Lab Capabilities:

  • Bi-directional DC Source
    • Power: 3.2 MW
    • Voltage: ±1 kVDC
    • Location: Flex Power Laboratory, Arnhem, The Netherlands
    • Supports full-system testing with client Battery Management Systems (BMS)

Battery Degradation & Lifetime Modeling

We offer advanced testing and modeling to understand how batteries degrade over time. Our approach combines real-time testing with data-driven modeling to forecast battery health and longevity.

Key Services:

  • Controlled degradation testing under environmental and operational conditions
  • Acquisition and analysis of battery cell performance parameters

  • State of Health (SOH) forecasting
  • Capacity fade prediction
  • Residual lifetime estimation

Lab Capabilities:

  • Battery Cycling Test Stand
    • Voltage: up to 1000 V
    • Power: 200 kW per channel (up to 4 channels)

On-Site Verification Services

KEMA Labs also provides  on-site verification services  to ensure that BESS installations meet regulatory and operational standards, particularly for  Ultra-Fast Frequency Regulation (UVFR)  systems.

Key On-Site Services:

  • Verification of UVFR installation (Fast Regulation Unit – FRU) as per Annex A8
  • Compliance checks of test protocols (Annex A8)
  • Supervision of on-site commissioning tests
  • Supervision of conformity verification tests (to be performed at KEMA Labs)
  • Pre-acceptance testing at KEMA Labs

Objective: Ensure ultra-fast frequency regulation in the electrical grid, in compliance with  Tema’s A.8 specifications  for grid stability.
