Client Challenge
The aim of the project was the identification of the existing electricity storage systems different from the traditional ones based on hydro pumping. The rationale of this project was based on the worldwide development plans of renewable generation in the coming years and the high amount of problems that the integration of such new resources produces in the power delivery system, especially during the low load conditions.
What we have done
- A description of the main Italian rules governing the dispatch of electricity produced by renewable sources (i.e. wind) and the international experiences in other Countries (i.e. Spain);
- An overview of the main no hydroelectricity storage systems: batteries-based energy storage, flywheel energy storage, super-capacitors energy storage, superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), compressed air-based energy storage (CAES), in terms of the main parameters (storage power, energy size, efficiency, costs, life cycle, etc.) with a comparison between them;
- For each one, a description of the existing practical experiences (i.e. Plants where existing) has been reported too.
