Dii’s mission is to pave the way for a market for solar and wind power from the deserts for local consumption in North Africa and the Middle East and, eventually, for an export to Europe. The aim is to reach an energy mix of highest security of delivery, mainly based on lowest cost renewable electricity throughout the interconnected markets in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (EUMENA). Dii acts as a market and project enabler that builds partnerships throughout this region.
What we have done
CESI, as leader of the consortium with Universidad Pontificia Comillas (Spain), has been awarded a strategic and challenging study which, among the main objectives, has to establish the most attractive electricity highways necessary to transmit huge amounts of power on long distances between Europe and the MENA region both in the mid-term (year 2030) and in the long-term (year 2050) periods. The formulation of the most suitable electricity highways is based upon on solid scenarios of generation mix and development in the various areas of the MENA region and Europe forecasted for the two horizon years.
Even if the analysis is limited to the pre-feasibility stage, on the basis of these first results Dii, with the full involvement of all concerned shareholders, can move on setting up more detailed generation-transmission models enabling to identify the target transmission system reinforcements at mid and long term and the associated roadmap for the construction implementation plan. At this purpose, the study includes the assessment of the operational chanllanges and some recommendations in order to develop the grid infrastructures without compromising the security of the electric system distinguish between short-term period (up to the year 2022), mid-term (up to 2030) and long-term (up to 2050).
